A Rant About a Game That's Over 2 Years Old

Hey everybody, this is Jbizzo49.  It's been about 6 months since I posted here, holy crap.

Well, let's just get straight to the point.  A couple of months ago, Prometheus and I did a playthrough of Metroid: Other M.  That link will send you to that playlist should you want to actually suffer through that garbage.  I don't think I had enough say as to what I thought of the game since that playthrough was Prometheus's first full experience with it, so in essence, it was like I played the game so he didn't have to.  But I didn't give my full thoughts, so I thought here would be the place to give them.

If you still haven't picked up this game 2 years after its release, don't, and I'll tell you for why.

The story is like moldy Swiss cheese, it stinks and is full of holes.  I'm still convinced that this game's storyline is part of Mitt Romney's master plan to overturn Roe v. Wade.  But anyway, there was a possibility of me being able to say something positive about the storyline.  About halfway through the game, Samus suspects a traitor among the group of soldiers, and calls him "The Deleter", which would have been an interesting subplot had they actually followed up on it.  But other than that, the story makes you wonder why the hell you even like this franchise in the first place, kinda like Metal Gear Solid, only with less deliberate trolling.

The characterizations are wooden and nearly single-handedly took down the franchise.  You'd think a bare-bones character such as Samus wouldn't be so hard to do right, but Nintendo managed to ruin one of the most badass characters they have.  Not only does Samus's voice actress sound like a robot (which might not entirely be her fault, given she read THIS script) but the entire plot has misogynistic undertones to it.  And were the script writers Oedipal?  Seriously, the mother/mom references are off the charts.

The controls are crippled from the start due to the fact that, for some insane reason, this game is Wiimote-only.  The ability to switch perspectives between first- and third-person, however novel that idea was, is executed poorly.  This leads to...

...the game design.   It's atrocious.  Some idiot designer thought to himself, hmm, how about we make Missiles only usable in the first-person perspective?  So they did, and it gets annoying real fast.  Some other idiot designer said, how about no camera control in the third-person perspective?  So they did, leaving moments in backtracking where you're running TOWARDS the camera not being able to see what's in front of you until it's already about half a second too late.  Total bull, what is this, Resident Evil?  A third idiot designer asked, how about we put some instant death sections that pop up with almost no warning?  These don't serve to terrify the player, rather it just makes the player throw their controller in frustration.  And don't even get me started on the sub-bosses, which were cool until I had to fight them about 10 goddamned times.

The soundtrack is lacking.  Other than a couple of series mainstays, Other M's soundtrack isn't all that memorable.  What happened here?  Did the people who do music for this franchise have the night off or something?
